Dog/Cat Registration

All dogs/cats over the age of 3 months must be registered with Council and must wear the tags at all times. Registrations expire on 30 June each year, and are due to be re-registered by the 31 August each year.

To register your dog or cat, please come into the Council offices to fill out the 'Application for Registration of a Dog/Cat', ensuring that you have written proof of  desexing and microchipping or training. You can register a dog/cat if you are over the age of 16 and provide documentation to prove your identity.

For more information about responsible dog ownership please visit the Good Dog SA website.

Cats cannot be registered if they are not microchipped and desexed.

Change of Address

To provide the Registar with a Change of Address, please fill out the back of the yellow original copy of the 'Application for Registration of a Dog/Cat' that you would have received when registering your dog/cat.

If you've misplaced the form, please come into the Council offices to fill out the 'Application for Registration of a Dog/Cat' - change of address section.

Dogs and Cat Reforms - as of 1 July 2018

Cat and Dog

On 1 July 2018, new laws will be introduced impacting dog and cat owners and breeders in South Australia. These include:

- The introduction of a statewide database called Dogs and Cats Online
- Mandatory microchipping of dogs and cats
- New rules for breeders and sellers of dogs and cats

Dogs and Cats Online

From 1 July 2018, all dog and cat registrations will be kept on a statewide database, Dogs and Cats Online (DACO). Owners will be able to login online any time and update their contact details, pay annual dog registration renewals, and notify Council if their dog or cat has gone missing.

All cat microchip information is required to be registered on DACO. Owners are responsible for recording this information on DACO if their cats were microchipped before 1 July 2018. Microchip implanters are responsible for documenting this information on DACO if they microchip a cat after 1 July 2018.

For more information, visit

Mandatory microchipping and desexing

All dogs and cats must be microchipped, with puppies and kittens needing to be microchipped by 12 weeks of age or at the point of sale. If you become the owner of a new dog or cat that doesn’t already have a microchip, you must have one implanted within 28 days.

All dogs (excluding working livestock dogs) and cats born after 1 July 2018 must be desexed by the time they are six months of age*. If you become the owner of a new dog or cat after 1 July 2018, they must be desexed within 28 days. They can only be desexed by a registered veterinary surgeon.

*Exemptions apply. For more information, visit

Breeders and sellers

All dog and cat breeders and sellers must abide by the South Australian Standards and Guidelines for Breeding and Trading Companion Animals that were introduced in August 2017.

From 1 July 2018, if you are a breeder and you intend on selling a dog or a cat, you need to register as a breeder with the Dog and Cat Management Board.

You cannot sell a dog or cat unless it has been desexed and microchipped in accordance with the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995.

Expiations and Fines

Residents should be aware that on the 1st of July 2017 the Dog and Cat Management Board, a statutory board in South Australia, significantly increased the fines and expiations for dogs and cats.
